the high, with more daylight. my current three-part mix for less couch, less spiral, and (at least for me) fewer snack emergencies.

my current formula

one person's field notes. bodies, strains, doses, and laws vary.

hand-drawn weed bud thcthe base the buzz, not the bog. i go sativa-forward: high limonene, high pinene, and i skip the myrcene-heavy stuff that whispers "sit down." that part's more folklore than proven, so treat it as a starting point. Durban Poison

Green Crack
Sour Diesel
hand-drawn weed bud cbdthe ballast for me, CBD takes some of the sharpness out of the THC without flattening the whole thing. the evidence is genuinely mixed: one trial found equal THC/CBD less anxious than THC alone, another found CBD didn't blunt the other effects. results vary wildly by person, dose, and format. 1:1:1 is my baseline. dial THC up for heavier, down for clearer; the CBD and CBG hold the line either way. or just play with it below.

section 02

why i think it works

hand-drawn bell curve labeled enjoyment versus high-ness
  1. for me, the CBG is what keeps the munchies down and the head clear. the human evidence is thin and i'm mostly going on my own logs, so hold this loosely.
  2. CBD seems to take the edge off the THC without flattening the high, though how much depends a lot on dose, format, and the person.
  3. sativa-leaning terpenes seem to tilt it toward energy over couch. that's still more preliminary than predictable.
  4. and the theory that the whole beats the parts. the entourage effect, if you want to sound like you read about it. (still debated.)

when to smoke it

hand-drawn sketch of a bic lighter, standing upright

morning or midday. treat it like coffee, not a nightcap. it's built to switch your brain on, so point it at the right things.

the whole point any creative task: writing, designing, making something. the afternoon second wind, when the lull hits and you want it back. a walk you'd like to be more interesting than it is.
works fine, just not the headline email and spreadsheets. grocery shopping. the errands you keep dodging. perfectly doable. not what it's for, but it'll get you there.
your call calling your accountant. could go either way. read the room, and the quarter.
the one real no right before bed. this whole mix is built to wake your brain up, not put it down. you'll lie there redesigning your kitchen.

sourcing the cbg

hand-drawn sketch of a usps shipping box

THC you handle yourself. CBD and CBG you can order online: legally, cheaply, delivered. a 3.5g of quality CBG flower runs $12–18 shipped. this is the part that makes the mix actually affordable.

too lazy to make it yourself?

fair. rolling your own is cheaper and dialed exactly to taste. but if you just want to buy something close, a few ready-made options actually pull it off. all of them turn up most places recreational pot is sold.

Supernaturals — CBG Cake pre-roll a NYC brand. a CBG + THC pre-roll. good, and a little wild. the closest thing to the real mix you can buy already rolled.
Wyld — Grapefruit Gummies gummy 1:1:1 THC : CBG : CBC (CBC's the mood one). no CBD here, but the CBG still blunts the THC, and it's sativa-enhanced. they literally pitch it as the no-munchies gummy.
Off Hours — ½g Vape vape pen a half-gram, dialed, with the sauce in it, not just thc. another nyc brand. the move for when you don't even want to light up.

section 07

how this happened

three versions, a few years apart, each one fixing what the last couldn't. how it went from "why am i terrified in a cereal aisle" to the thing i actually smoke now.

v1 — the calm 2019 · aug · oregon

marley natural · cbd + thc

theory: pair CBD with THC and it blunts the anxiety that rides along with a pure-THC high. for me it worked: anxiety down, calmer high. but the munchies did not get the memo.

→ version one: cbd calms the thc. halfway there.

marley natural packaging, oregon, august 2019 exhibit a · marley natural · 2019
v2 — the focus 2022 · feb · nyc

wyld pear · 1:1 thc:cbg

holy shit. wyld pear gummies: 100mg THC, 100mg CBG. had no idea what CBG was. took one. high. focused. zero munchies. wanted to go outside instead of toward the fridge.

→ version two: add cbg, and for me the munchies vanish.

kept going down the rabbit hole. even ran a sedona half marathon on appetite-suppressing cannabinoids, just to see whether the right ones slow you down. for me, they didn't.

first cbg purchase, nyc, february 2022 exhibit b · first cbg · 2022
v3 — the formula 2024 · dec · home

three cannabinoids · specific strains · rolled at home

turns out all three are orderable online, cheap. so i sourced each one as its own strain, separately. mixed at home. rolled it. smoked it. better than anything pre-made, at least to me. no anxiety. no munchies. no cereal-aisle paralysis. just the parts worth keeping.

→ version three: all three, dialed. this is the productivity joint.

isn't pot bad for you?

yeah, probably not ideal. i roasted some brain cells in high school, started a little too early. and at the start of this year i quit pot entirely for a few months. honestly, the break was a good idea.

but i gave it real thought, and here's where i landed: if i were still smoking normal weed? hell no. but the productivity joint is basically weed with the worst parts nerfed. it's been a net positive in my life, at least so far.

the caveat: if your brain isn't done developing, go easy. i don't regret high school, but it wasn't free. might've gotten into a better college, passed a few more classes, stacked a pile more AP credits. then again: who gives a fuck about AP credits.

"i have gotten more out of weed than weed has gotten out of me."

an aside

the munchies conspiracy

→ open the conspiracy drawer
hand-drawn sketch of a snickers bar

this part isn't a theory. when cigarettes started dying in the 80s, big tobacco moved the money into food. philip morris bought general foods in 1985 and kraft in 1988. rjr took nabisco. for a stretch, the biggest food company in america was a cigarette company.

same owners, same playbook. a 2023 study in addiction went through the numbers: from 1988 to 2001, tobacco-owned brands were 29% more likely to sell fat-and-salt bombs and 80% more likely to sell the carb-and-salt kind. lunchables, jell-o, teddy grahams. engineered to keep you eating. the people who hooked you on cigarettes built the snack aisle.

the munchies aren't a side effect. they're the synergy.

so when pot goes legal and the defining side effect makes you eat, ask who benefits. i'd bet big sugar is already in cahoots with big pot. schemey fuckers. (this last part, obviously, is just a hunch.)

still in the kitchen

can i get some?

no. (not yet.) this is three jars and a grinder on my kitchen counter. a hobby, not a company. but batches happen, and word gets around.
